December is Earthquake Safety Month

Earthquakes are a very real problem in California. Perhaps that’s why the month of December was dubbed Earthquake Safety Month. According to the National Safety Council, California has seen the strongest earthquakes nationally—though strong earthquakes have happened in other countries. And that’s why if you live in California, it’s important to know the basics of earthquake safety to protect yourself, your coworkers, and your family. Because they’re hard to predict, it’s impossible to be fully prepared when an earthquake strikes. But there are a few things you can do ahead of time including:

• Securing large appliances and heavy furniture (file cabinets, dressers) to the floor or wall.
• Keeping heavy objects off the wall above where you sleep or work.
• Ensure that heavy and easily breakable objects are kept on lower shelves in your home and office.
